When Porsche
were developing their new 944 "S3" they realized too much of the car
had been modified or changed completely so the name was changed to 968.
An updated
version of the 944's engine now upgraded to 3.0 L and producing 236 hp was added. The 968's engine was the
second-largest and most powerful naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder
available in a production car. A 6-speed manual and tiptronic automatic transmissions were
available. The style looked somewhat like the 928, but it looks more like a
blend of the Type 993 911 and a 944 S2. These changes included pop-up H1 headlamps, color-keyed
composite aero-style side mirrors, contoured and reinforced aluminum door
handles, raised hatch spoiler, side skirts and bumper covers contoured to be
flush with body surface and profile with embossed "Porsche" script in
rear. "Cup" style 16" alloy wheels were added and wide
selections of interior and exterior colors were made available.
The 968 was
sold as a coupe and a convertible,
much of its chassis was the 944S2 chassis. The 968 shared other components with
the 944 Turbo; 4-piston brake calipers on all
four wheels, aluminum semi-trailing arms and aluminum
front A-arms. The unibody structure was also very similar to previous models
but Porsche maintained that 80% of the car was new.
A street-legal
race variant was introduced called the Porsche 968 CS (Club Sport.) It included
a stripped-out interior including racing seats, a revised suspension and larger wheels and tires. This was
only offered in Europe & Australia. A UK-only version called the 968 Sport,
a Club Sport model with some comfort features was produced in 1994 and 1995.
Fifteen Turbo S versions were made only for European sale; it managed 0-60mph
in 4.7seconds and had top speeds of around 180mph. A race variant called the
968 Turbo RS was added as well; only 4 were made. Approximately 2000 968 cabriolets
and 2000 968 coupes were imported to the United
States between 1992 and 1995.
The 968 was the
last Porsche front engine car before the Cayenne SUV
in 2003. The 968 and the 928 GTS were sold together until 1995 when both models
were dropped.
You may find a used Porsche 968 in a salvage yard where
it could be useful for parts and accessories or as a project car. You could be
lucky and find one in new condition.
