The 944 was
based on the 924; the Volkswagen engine was scrapped and a new alloy 2.5 litre fuel
efficient four cylinder straight-4
engine based on the 928's
5.0 litre V8. Two counter rotating balance shafts running at twice
engine speed by made by Mitsubishi Motors were added to make the engine feel
smoother.
The bodywork was inspired by the 924 Turbo and 924 Carrera GT and a new
interior was added. The braking
and suspension systems were updated. It had great
handling, stopping power and was comfortable to drive. The 944 boasts near
perfect front to rear weight distribution this gave it balanced, predictable
handling.
There were
upgrades in 1985, new dash, new door panels, upgraded alternator, embedded
radio antenna, larger fuel tank, Porsche sound system, heated and powered seats
(option), noise reduction and new wheels.

A third evolution of the 944 was being worked on in the
early 1990s, the S3. In fact, so many things had been changed to the 944 that
in 1962 it was replaced with the 968.
You may
find a used Porsche 944 in
a salvage yard where it could be useful for parts and accessories or as a
project car. You could be lucky and find one in new condition.
