In the late 1960’s Porsche 911 sales were slumping and Porsche executives were worried the 911 had reached its peak potential and could not be improved upon. The executives had an idea to make a luxury car that would be comfortable enough to drive long distance but also be driven like a sports car.
Concern with the pricing of fuel during the 1970s oil crisis made Porsche consider smaller engines for fuel economy. A 3.3 L 180hp (130kW) powerplant was drawn up but company engineers were not happy with the small engine. They finally settled on a 4.5 L, SOHC 16-valve V8 which towed the line between performance and fuel economy.
People were impressed with the comfort and power but sales were slow. Prices were high and the purists were put off the 928's futuristic styling and were more attracted to the 911.
Peter Schutz decided the 928 and 911 models should be sold together because the 911 still had a place in Porsche. The 928 had fans but never hit the sales expected and was discontinued in 1995.
You may find a used Porsche 928 in a salvage yard where it could be useful for parts and accessories or as a project car. You could be lucky and find one in new condition.
