In the late 1960’s Porsche were looking for a replacement for their 912 entry-level model. Volkswagen also wanted a new model. The majority of Volkswagen’s developmental work was handled by Porsche, so the 914 was to be a joint project. After initially deciding to have a flat four-cylinder engine sold as a Volkswagen and a flat six-cylinder engine as a Porsche, they realised the two models sharing bodywork wouldn’t be a good idea and therefore allowed both versions to be sold as Porsches in North America.
Volkswagen’s chairman Heinz Nordhoff sadly died on April 12th 1968. Kurt Lotz replaced him an after an argument, communication broke down between Porsche and Volkswagen. This meant that Porsche had to share tooling expenses. The price and marketing concept for the 914 had failed before the production began. The Porsche 914/6 ended up costing near to what the 911T cost, this had a serious effect on sales. The Porsche 914-4 however was Porsche’s best selling model outselling the 911, it sold 118,000 units worldwide.
Volkswagen of America exported the cars to the U.S., where both versions were badged and sold as Porsches. The four-cylinder cars were sold as Volkswagen-Porsches in Europe at Volkswagen dealerships. Many automotive said this ‘tainted’ the car.
Slow sales and rising costs prompted Porsche to discontinue the 914/6 variant in 1972 after producing 3,351 of them, 914 production ended in 1976. The 2.0 L flat-4 engine was used in the 912E, which was the entry-level Porsche model until the 924 was made.
You may find a used Porsche 914 in a salvage yard where it could be useful for parts and accessories or as a project car. You could be lucky and find one in new condition.
