The Porsche 912 was an entry level Porsche car and came in a Coupé, Soft window Targa and Hard window Targa. The various options available were: sunroof, Fuchs forged alloy wheels, Blaupunkt radio, various paint color options, leather upholstery, Hella fog/spot lamps, luggage and S pack.
The Porsche 912 was manufactured between 1965 and 1969. When the Porsche 365 was discontinued in 1965 Porsche only had the 911 to sell, which was considerably more expensive than the 356. This gave the executives the idea to introduce an entry-level Porsche, The 912.
The 912 had a 911 body and was cheap, reliable, had light steering and was fuel efficient. The car managed this tall order by using a 356 four-cylinder engine in a 911 chassis. This formula produced 30,000 units in a five-year production and for the first few years outsold the 911.
The 911 was updated and now included a 991S which was more powerful and they added a cheaper 911T. Porsche bosses felt the 912 was now redundant and to enable them to create a new model, they discontinued the 912.
In 1976 owing to the vacancy of the now discontinued 914 and its official replacement, the 924, still being put into production a 912E was sold in North America. This new 912E featured the ‘G series’ 911 bodywork and had a 2.0 Volkswagen air cooled engine.
In the nineties 912’s were cheap and neglected. Since then their popularity has risen as people have realised they will cope with being driven daily and won’t break the bank.
You can find a used Porsche 912 today in a salvage yard where it could be useful for parts and accessories or as a project car. You could be lucky and find one in new condition or one that has had an engine upgrade.
