Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle; he was also the
founder of Porsche. His son Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche created another
four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car; the 356. It
was designed by Erwin Komenda but its mechanicals (engine, suspension and
chassis) were taken from the Volkswagen. After the 356 was road certified on
June 8, 1948 Porsche re-engineered the car for performance. This meant that by
the late 50’s fewer parts were shared between Volkswagen and Porsche. A new
factory was made in Zuffenhausen, where the 356 bodies were made of steel as
opposed to the Aluminum bodies made in the Gmünd factory.
In the early 1950s the 356 gained attention
from enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, handling,
and excellent build quality. Commonly owners would race the car as well as
drive it on the street. Increasing success with its racing and road cars gave
Porsche over 10,000 orders for units in 1964. 356 production ended in 1965 after
approximately 76,000 had been produced.
These iconic cars can still be purchased for
a sensible amount although the very best and most rare Porsche 356 are worth a
small fortune. The Porsche 550 spyder was made famous by James Dean and is one
of the most desirable Porsche cars ever.
There are lots of opportunities to buy bargain Porsche 356 restoration

overall cost. Many will not be economic 356 projects.
