Porsche 911 Turbo
The Porsche Turbo Model was produced in February 1975, initial models were fitted with 7JX15 front wheels and 8JX15 rear Fuchs alloys with blank centers.Dunlop tires were standard but the new Pirelli P7 soon became a popular option.
In 1977 it received power brake boosters. Two central fresh air vents were added to the dash, improving effectiveness of the air conditioning. In 1973 a boost gauge was fitted for the first time. 7Jx16 front and 8Jx16 rear wheels became standard. The Turbo engine was bored and stroked to 3.3 litres in 1978 and was fitted with an intercooler. A 917 style brake system featuring cross drilled vented discs and four piston alloy callipers. In 1980 dual outlet exhaust and new tube style oil cooler were added. Turbo was dropped from United States, Japan and Canada model line ups. In 1981the turbo was available in Canada once again.
The first slant nose Turbo came out on July 16, 1981 from the restoration shop at Zuffenhausen. It was a special order conversion but it became an official option for the 1987 model year. The Turbo received a new exhaust system but was still unavailable in the United States and Japan. In 1984 the engine was fitted with upgraded chain tensioners and the turbo was equipped with a dash mounted brake pad warning indicator. A new heater system with a three speed fan was installed as well.
The Turbo returned to the U.S. market with DME, Oxygen sensors and catalytic converters to meet emissions and fuel requirements. The rear wheels were increased to 9Jx16. A five speed transmission and hydraulic clutch were added to the Turbo in 1989 but this would be the last turbo to be made.
